FACTS ABOUT SIOUX FALLS: by Anna and Emily
One: In 1856, two rival land companies vied to be the first to establish a town near the falls. The Dakota Land Company arrived first and claimed the prime site below The Falls.
Two: The town was ransacked and burned but speculators would not let the town die. They pressed the government to establish a fort to protect the town. In 1865, the military responded, and Fort Dakota was established, where present-day downtown Sioux Falls stands.
Three: By 1873, the population grew to 593, and a building boom was underway. The village was incorporated in 1876 and consisted of 1,200 acres.
Four: The first documented visit was by Philander Prescott, an explorer, trader, and trapper who camped overnight at the falls in December 1832.
Five: In August 1862 the settlers, fearing violence from the local Native Americans, abandoned the village.
Six: Raiders did burn the buildings and destroyed everything including an old Smith printing press used by the Sioux Falls Democrat that was dumped in the Big Sioux River after it was stripped of decorative items.
Seven: Today Sioux Falls, through the processing of agricultural products, serves as a distribution center for farms in Iowa, Minnesota, and South Dakota.
Eight: The arrival of the railroads ushered in the great Dakota Boom decade of the 1880’s. The population of Sioux Falls mushroomed from 2,164 in 1880 to 10,167 at the close of the decade.
Nine: The falls also drew the attention of early explorers. An August 1804 journal entry of the Lewis and Clark expedition describes the falls of the “Soues River”.
Ten: Although conflicts in Minnehaha County between American Indians and white settlers were few, the Dakota War of 1862 engulfed southwestern Minnesota. The town was evacuated in August of that year when two local settlers were killed as a result of the conflict.
